[downtime] soak.cs.princeton.edu Downtime, Thursday, August 23, 2018, 09:00-10:30

Date: Thursday, August 23, 2018 (09:00-10:30)

Who is affected:
All users of the CS department computing using soak.cs.princeton.edu

What is happening:
soak.cs.princeton.edu will be shutdown for replacement of a defective DIMM.

Why is it happening:
Hardware monitoring has indicated that a DIMM in this system is in a
pre-failure state and likely to fail soon. So as to avoid an unplanned
failure that may threaten the stability of the host, we are scheduling this
outage to replace the failing DIMM preemptively.

We will post updates to the status page: http://www.csstaff.org
as necessary.

If this downtime will cause you undue hardship, please contact
csstaff@cs.princeton.edu immediately, so we can discuss options to reduce
any negative impact. Your patience is appreciated.

[downtime] CS Storage Downtime, Tuesday, July 24, 2018, 05:00-08:00

Date: Tuesday, July 24, 2018 (05:00-08:00)

Who is affected:
All users of the CS department computing.

What is happening:
We are upgrading our storage operating system, which requires for CS

This is necessary in order to fix numerous bugs on our file system.

We will post updates to the status page: http://www.csstaff.org
as necessary.

If this downtime will cause you undue hardship, please contact
csstaff@cs.princeton.edu immediately, so we can discuss options to reduce

[downtime] CS Network Downtime, Tuesday, July 3, 2018, 07:00-08:00

Date: Tuesday, July 3, 2018 (07:00-08:00)

Who is affected:
All users of CS Department networks or services, including wired network
service in the CS Building, 221 Nassau Street, 194 Nassau Street, Corwin
Hall, and the CITP area of Sherrerd Hall. Network services such as email

What is happening:
During this window, the core router supporting the CS Department network
will undergo a hardware upgrade. This will result in a near-total network
outage which will last several minutes, but not the entirety of the
scheduled time.

Why is it happening:
This hardware upgrade will prepare the CS network for future connectivity
and feature improvements, including higher capacity links for increased
bandwidth to the broader Internet.

We will post updates to the status page: http://www.csstaff.org
as necessary.

If this downtime will cause you undue hardship, please contact

[downtime] Emergency CIFS/SMB Server Downtime, Monday, June 11, 2018, 14:00-15:00

Date: Monday, June 11, 2018 (14:00-15:00)

Who is affected:
Users of the CS Department CIFS/SMB file server service.

What is happening:
One node of our file server cluster will be rebooted, so some CIFS/SMB file
shares may be unavailable during the reboot. Most clients should be
unaffected.

If you find your CIFS/SMB connection is hung or disconnected, wait a few
minutes and then attempt to reconnect.

Why is it happening:
A firmware bug in the file server has caused a destabilizing failure in one
of the nodes. As a result, that node needs to be rebooted. During the
reboot, some CIFS/SMB service will be disrupted, but all other functions of
the file server should failover to other nodes and continue uninterrupted.

We will post updates to the status page: http://www.csstaff.org
as necessary.

If this downtime will cause you undue hardship, please contact
csstaff@cs.princeton.edu immediately, so we can discuss options to reduce
any negative impact. Your patience is appreciated.

not be completed at that time due to unforeseen obstacles. This upgrade is
